Storing Belongings for the Fall Season

Storage ImageUnfortunately it’s that sad time of year where the days are getting shorter and the temperatures cooler. Summer is coming to an end, and the fall season is upon us…Where did the time go!?

While we would all love summer to stay, a change in season means a change in wardrobe, and leisure/entertainment activities. Evenings are getting chillier, and the leaves are already showing signs of fall. It’s officially that time of year to begin tucking away the summer belongings to prepare for fall and winter.

Perhaps your West Kootenay home is already jammed with overflowing closets and your garage is no different; so where in the world are you going to manage the storage space for these items?  Consider turning to a professional self storage facility for the easiest storage solution you can depend on.  Storing your summer belongings at a self storage facility ensures they remain protected and secure, while eliminating excessive clutter in your home that you don’t have room for anyways.  Messy rooms can cause infestations of small rodents, which can spoil and damage your belongings.

At West Kootenay Self Storage, we have listed a number of items you may wish to store for the upcoming months:

  • Boats
  • RVs
  • Canoes
  • Kayaks
  • Swimming Gear
  • Paddle Boats
  • Water Skis
  • Kites
  • Golf Clubs
  • Bicycles
  • ATVs
  • Barbeques (With no Propane Tanks)
  • Fishing Rods
  • Lawn Mowers
  • Tents
  • Summer clothing

How should you prepare items for storage?

Any clothing or other fabric should be cleaned and dried out thoroughly. This will reduce the potential of bugs and mould development. Shoes should be cleaned and stuffed with crumpled newspapers to help hold their shape in storage. Consider placing each pair in its own clear shoe bag to protect the shoes, and make removing them from storage an easy task when the time arrives.

Motorized equipment such as lawn mowers should be free of gas before placing in storage. All metal parts should also be cleaned and polished with lubricant to prevent the development of rust.

  • Water toys should also be carefully cleaned and thoroughly dry prior to storing away. Be sure that you properly seal each box with tape, and remember to label each box so that you can find items the next time you need them, without any hassle.
  • Refrain from using plastic bags when storing your belongings. They often trap moisture, which contributes to bad odour and mould – never a pleasant encounter to deal with.
  • Store belongings in acid-free boxes to protect them from chemical degradation, and insert a sheet of acid free tissue between items to protect individual goods. You can obtain both packing materials from West Kootenay Self Storage.
  • Drop a silica gel pack inside each box before closing so that they soak up any moisture.
