Old Items You Should Consider Removing From Your Storage Unit

There is no doubt that a self-storage unit is a great way to store away a lot of belongings that you don’t need to have in your normal, day-to-day life. Our self-storage units at West Kootenay can hold an assortment of different things, such as boxes of clothing, pieces of art work and stacks of books. You can even store vehicles at our storage unit facility, but are you holding onto items that seem to be a little outdated? If the answer if yes, it might be time to remove those items from your self-storage unit.

Outdoor Self Storage Units

The question you should ask yourself is where do you start for your storage unit clean out? Then after you finish cleaning out the storage unit, what do you do with all those old items?

Old Furniture

One place to start is an obvious one - your old furniture. Do you really need the big, bulky couch from a dozen years ago? Is holding onto an old reclining chair really essential? Maybe the living room table that hasn’t been used in a long time is taking up some room. It’s a good idea to think about removing some of these big, old furniture items from your storage space. Amazon, eBay, Craigslist or Kijiji are good websites to use to sell them.

Outdated home and cooking appliances can get the boot. If you currently have all the appliances that you need for your basic home needs, then stored away appliances like old microwave ovens, outdated toasters, ancient barbecues and rusting pressure cookers, can be taken out of storage. Are you ever going to plug that old microwave back in to use, or are you going to turn on that cracked, dusty pressure cooker for your cooking needs? It’s doubtful!

Vintage Clothing

Then look at removing vintage clothing. It could be any piece of clothing like hats, shirts, pants, jackets, belts and shoes. If some of the clothing items are so old that you know you or anyone else is your family will ever actually wear them, there should be no reason to keep them. Old clothing can be donated to thrift stores, sold at yard sales or they can be sold online.

Next on your list can be out-of-date electronics you have put away in your unit. If you aren’t planning on pulling out your old Nintendo video game system to plug into your big, bulky box shaped television set to use for your own entertaining enjoyment, is there any reason to hold onto these items? Other electronics could include old computers, laptops, fax machines, printers, stereo systems, VCR and DVD players, home and mobile telephones and video cameras.

There are many other old items you can consider getting rid of, including worn out or broken tools (example- drills, sanders and wrenches) and children’s toys (example - Lego sets, action figures and dolls).
